Free ChatGPT access for verified academic researchers

OpenAI runs a programme giving researchers, scientists, engineers and mathematicians access to its most capable ChatGPT models along with Codex and expanded deep-research usage limits.

Approval is based on affiliation with a recognised degree-granting research institution, verification of an institutional email address and a description of the research work the access will support. Once approved, a primary researcher can bring in a small number of collaborators from the same institution.

OpenAI has said it is expanding the programme through 2027. That is a statement about the programme, not a promise about how long any individual account keeps access, so the entitlement length is recorded here as unknown rather than guessed.

No payment card is requested as part of the application.
